Sirius and Shadow get in a fight following the Beach/ Camping results, Sirius begins to grow very overconfident and cocky after winning the last 6 straight Subfests in a row, angering Shadow. Both brothers split up, Sirius goes to the cafe, where he runs into Subspace and Vibrant, the latter two failed to cheer Sirius up and suggest he take time at home to rest.
Shadow on the other hand leaves the studio and returns to where he lived before moving in with Sirius a few years earlier, his home gets destroyed by the weather, and he can't find anywhere to stay, he eventually retreats to the Deepsea metro, where he runs into Callen, who is finishing up his mission, and offers him a place to stay. Which Shadow accepts.

Sirius returns home, and looks at Shadow's belongings, he spends the night, alone, with his pet cat; all while lamenting as he watches Inkopolis News After Dark, hosted by Red. The next morning, Sirius contemplates calling Shadow, but gets a call from Vibrant before he could make his decision. Vibrant offers him an outing at a local mall, which he accepts.
Shadow on the other hand, moves into Callen's apartment and then meets Callen's dormmate, Thomas, but after his recent experience with Sirius, refuses to get along with the inkling. He declines food and drinks, as if he is on a hunger strike; this begins to worry Callen and Thomas, Shadow struggles to get Sirius and his recent negative experiences out of his mind.

Sirius goes to the mall, as Vibrant offered. He finds a group of 4 that consists of Subspace, Vibrant, Speed, and their newest friend, Hyper. The group of cephalopods notice that Sirius is feeling down and in the dumps, and decide to cheer him up as Hyper was taking a tour of Inkopolis that day anyway, after returning to Inkopolis for the first time since before Chaos won the Finalfest. After a long day of fun and games, the 5 form a group called the Cephalocrew, and agree to remain friends forever; after the group calls it a day that evening, Sirius gets a phone call from Callen asking him to report to the studio the next day. As Sirius heads home, a mysterious female inkling observes from a distance.
After a couple days with Callen, Shadow starts to open to him and Thomas. When helping Thomas bring in some bags, Shadow mistakes Thomas for Sirius, but quickly shrugs it off and thanks the two for offering Shadow a place to stay. Callen then asks Shadow to come to Channel 8 Studios to record his lines for the upcoming Subfest. He feels relieved when Callen tells him that Sirius won't be there as he's hanging out with his "new friends" as told from a "3rd party". After recording his lines, Shadow asks if he's making a difference at the studio, which Callen says he is. Shadow then asks about this new group, Callen tells him about the Cephalocrew, and gives false information about it, leading Shadow to believe that Sirius has moved on and left Shadow behind, making him feel neglected. Callen decides to cheer Shadow up by taking him to a special spot where Joryan used to hang out before he disappeared from the metro a couple years ago.

Callen and Shadow go to the Lookout Cliffs just outside town, where Joryan hung out with his teammates. Callen and Shadow open up and oddly share the same interests (even though this is Joryan's light talking in the form of Callen), during their stay, the two run into a female inkling named Celestia, who also happens to be the 3rd party that Callen learned of the Cephalocrew from. She warns them both to leave before the owners get back. Callen and Celestia take Shadow to a clothing store to change his look so he could blend in with the crowds of Inkopolis and not as one of the Octo Bros. She takes Shadow's jacket and slips a paper containing a phone number in his pocket. She leaves, and Shadow finds a new look which appeals him. Callen approves of his fashion choice and leaves, Celestia secretly heads to Callen's office at Channel 8 Studios and leaves Shadow's jacket there, knowing that Sirius would be there later on.
Meanwhile, Sirius goes to Channel 8 Studios, to find it rather empty. Until he finds an unlocked door that leads to Callen's office and finds Shadow's jacket on a chair. Callen comes up by surprise, and they record Sirius' lines for the next Subfest. Afterwards, Sirius asks how Shadow has been doing after he saw the coat; Callen once again spreads false information, this time, to beat Sirius down, by telling him that Shadow never wants to see him again. He takes Shadow's jacket with him home, as it's the last physical item he has of Shadow. Upon coming home, Sirius realizes that Shadow's belongings have mysteriously vanished. With the jacket as the only thing left of his friend, he throws it and a piece of paper falls out of the pocket, which contains a phone number.

Sirius has pummeled into a state of depression, after ignoring texts and phone calls from his new friends of the Cephalocrew for a few days, Subspace steps up and goes to pay him a visit. Subspace is in shock when he sees how Sirius has been living since he did his lines at the studio. Sub tries to cheer Sirius up, this time with more oomph, he even confesses to his failure at protecting Joryan during the metro mission. He doesn't want Sirius lose Shadow as he lost his best friend. The two have a brotherly-bonding moment, and Subspace realizes that the fireworks show was about to start. He and Sirius quickly head out to reunite with the crew, after the latter gets clean and changes his look to blend in with the crowds of Inkopolis and not as one of the Octo Bros.
For Shadow, he's adjusting to his new look in Inkopolis; after a couple weeks since the department store, Shadow has adjusted to life with Callen and Thomas. Callen and Thomas mention to Shadow of an upcoming fireworks show. Shadow refuses the offer and states that he is a "lone wolf", and rather limit who he keeps in contact with. Later that evening, Shadow gets a phone call from an unknown source, the other end of the call keeps his identity a secret until Shadow does as instructed, he tells Shadow to meet him in the Deepsea metro. Shadow and Callen head for the Deepsea Metro, and run into Diebrant, the mysterious voice on the other end of the call. He suspected that Shadow would come with someone, calling him "smart", like when they left the Lookout Cliffs that one night. During this meeting, Diebrant plants the seeds of darkness in Shadow's subconscious after the work Callen has done over the past few weeks. Diebrant gives Shadow the stuff he "Stole" from Sirius' place. On the way home, Shadow now decides to take Callen's offer of the fireworks after all, once he drops his stuff off at Callen's.

Subspace and Sirius join the rest of the Cephalocrew on a beach to enjoy a fireworks show. The group reflect on their short history together, and enjoy the spectacle. Hyper grows hungry and sends Sirius out to get food from the boardwalk. While doing so, Sirius comes across an Octoling that looks alot like Shadow. Sirius talks about his rough childhood, having no real friends or family until Shadow came into his life. The Octoling tells Sirius an important lesson, "keep your friends close", using his near-death experience with the savage Salmonids as an example. The Octoling also tells Sirius the importance of friendship with "even the best of friends fight sometimes.". After learning lessons from both this Octoling and Subspace, Sirius now realizes it's not too late, and promises to give Shadow a call, using the number from Shadow's jacket. Sirius reunites with the crew, and Subspace tells Vibrant that the two are needed for a mission. Sirius, Speed, and Hyper, decide to focus on training around Inkopolis to keep in shape, after the recent events they all endured. Sirius is happy, being with his real friends under the fireworks in the nighttime sky; but little did they know, that rough times were ahead for them all.
Shadow, Callen, and Thomas head for the Snapper Canal to watch the exact same fireworks show the Sirius watched with the Cephalocrew. While there though, Shadow comes across a student enrolled in the local photography school, once she realizes that she is in the presence of Shadow, thanks to Callen, she has a fangirl moment and asks to get in touch with Sirius. Shadow refuses, and the two scuffle over Shadow's Octophone, it is thrown into the canal and she apologizes deeply. Before the show concludes, Callen drags Thomas home, much to his disappointment. But not before Shadow gets the number of this strange girl, who may have bigger ambitions than she shared.

About a week or so has passed since the Fireworks show happened. Sirius joins the rest of the crew at a local cafe for breakfast, and everybody is bright and cheery... except for Subspace. Vibrant says that they came across a horrifying sight while on their mission, which sent Subspace’s morale to rock bottom. Sirius decides to give Shadow a call in front of everyone, to make amends. While the phone rings though, the tv broadcasts the upcoming Subfest. Sirius vs. Shadow Meanwhile, at Callen's place, Shadow has pretty much opened up to Callen and Thomas at this point. The tv also begins playing the upcoming Subfest announcement which is the same the thing the crew watched at the cafe. At the same time, Shadow's new phone rings (it was a gift from Thomas). Callen answers it and hears Sub's voice. Subspace, in a montotone voice, asks for Shadow. But Callen at first refuses. Sub puts Sirius' phone on speaker and the entire crew shares how they feel about Sirius and the way he has been treated the last few weeks. It ends with Subspace admitting that a member of the Royal Family had just died, which was the sight Vibrant mentioned. Sirius then gives a heartwarming apology that Callen hears first, but before giving the phone to Shadow, he lies about the apology, causing Shadow to get angry and hang up on Sirius abruptly. The seeds of darkness that were planted by Diebrant began to sprout and Shadow begins being consumed by a Darkness, and his rampage will begin with this Subfest to get him his first Subfest win in nearly a year. Callen and Thomas get horrified by this and realize that it is far too late to save Shadow. Meanwhile, back at the cafe, Sirius is heartbroken once more, but the crew reassures him that his real friends are with him. Sirius swears he'll save Shadow, even if it means winning a seventh Subfest win in a row. Overhearing it all, Celestia decides to take matters into her own hands, and fast.

The Sirius vs. Shadow Subfest ends with Shadow taking victory, thus putting an end to Sirius’ win streak. On the morning of the results, Celestia arranges a meeting for both brothers in the streets on Inkopolis following the broadcast, leading them both to think they were to met with an opportunity for promotion at Channel 8. Upon arriving at the location, both brothers realize that this was a set up, and they see each other, face to face, for the first time since their argument nearly 2 months ago. Shadow glares at Sirius but using what he learned from Subspace and the crew, Sirius manages to give Shadow his actual apology. Shadow at this point realizes that Callen lied to him during the broadcast of the announcement about Sirius’ message, upon hearing Sirius, he accepts the apology. Sirius and Shadow make up, exchange a brotherly hug, and Sirius allows Shadow to move back into their home. They go home, together and agree to get Shadows’ belongings from Callen, together. When the brothers claim Shadows’ belongings back, Callen is taken by surprise that both Sirius and Shadow are together again, Shadow punches Callen for lying to him, then the brothers leave. From the distance, Celestia quietly cheers as she brought the two brothers back together, and gave Callen a taste of his own medicine for lying. Redeeming herself from her past actions once more​.
